Atempt to Identify - Shifty Lyft Impersonator

Derry Township Police are investigating a reported incident from a Lyft ride-share driver.  The Lyft driver reported receiving a call for a fare in the 100 block of West Chocolate Avenue through the Lyft ride-share app.  When he arrived in the area and started looking for his fare, a white Jeep Grand Cherokee was stopped on the north side of West Chocolate Avenue near Primanti Bros. restaurant.  The driver of the white Jeep Grand Cherokee made an abrupt U-turn in front of the Lyft driver and stopped on the south side of West Chocolate avenue, pulling up to what turned out to be the female half of the Lyft driver's fare.  Conversation was overheard with the driver of the White Jeep Grand Cherokee stating he was there to give the female the ride she requested.  He even rattled off some information about the Lyft ride-share that was requested.  Fortunately, the female had a second passenger and he did not recognize the White Jeep Grand Cherokee as the vehicle that Lyft sent to pick them up and pulled the female away from the white Jeep Grand Cherokee.  They saw their actual Lyft driver and got into the appropriate vehicle for their ride.  The Lyft driver who reported this to our department said the male party of his fare said he had heard from other ride-share users in the area this same white Jeep Grand Cherokee had been involved in other similar incidents in the Hershey area.

Our Department would like to talk with the Lyft ride-share fares that were picked up that night and almost took the ride the driver of the white Jeep Grand Cherokee was offering.  We are also attempting to identify the driver of the white Jeep Grand Cherokee.  We encourage those who are using these ride-share programs to use some of the safety tips recommended by companies such as Lyft and Uber, like;

  • Make sure the vehicle and driver described in your ride-share app match the vehicle and driver that are there to pick you up before you get in the car.
  • When possible, share your Lyft or Uber ride with another person so you are not alone.
  • Check the driver's rating within the app and stay away from those who receive a low ratings.
  • Do not drink to the point of intoxication as it will affect your judgement and ability to ensure your safety.

There are many other safety tips for using ride-share programs and they can be found on Lyft and Uber's websites as well as other ride-share safety sites.
