Fatal Fire Investigation Update 5/30/2019

Detectives with the Derry Township Police Department, in concert with the Dauphin County Coroner’s Office, the Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal, and the Dauphin County District Attorney’s Office, continue their investigation into the early morning residential structure fire that occurred on May 23, 2019 at 517 West Chocolate Avenue, Apartment 1, Hershey, PA.  Upon extinguishment of that fire, the body of 49-year-old Charlotte Chaplin, a resident of that apartment, was discovered.

While further evidence collection, examinations and testing are still being conducted, the investigation into the incident is leading investigators to believe the fire and death are both suspicious in nature.  At this point in the investigation, it is too early to speculate concerning the exact manner of death or the definitive source of the fire.  From information gathered at this point, we do not believe there is any danger to the public.  There is no further comment at this time.  We will continue to keep media outlets informed of any developments in the investigation.

Anyone who may have information regarding this investigation is encouraged to contact Derry Township Police Department at (717) 534-2202 or submit a tip at the top right corner of our Crimewatch page.
