Fatal Traffic Accident
On July 19, 2018, at approximately 8:04 p.m., Harrisburg Police Officers attempted to stop a vehicle in the area of N. 16th and Walnut Streets. The vehicle failed to stop and fled from the officers. The Officers did not pursue the vehicle due to the erratic and unsafe manner that it was travelling. A short time later, Officers were dispatched to a motorcycle accident at the intersection of 15th and Market Streets. The motorcyclist had been struck by a vehicle traveling the wrong way down N. 15th Street, according to witnesses in the area. The motorcyclist succumbed to his injuries. The vehicle that struck him came to rest against a fire hydrant at S. 15th and Zarker Streets and was confirmed to be the same vehicle that Harrisburg Police Officers attempted to stop earlier.
The operator of the vehicle, Maurice Phillips, was detained and taken to Harrisburg Hospital for his injuries, where he was sedated due to his combativeness with hospital staff. Phillips was wanted for a state parole detainer and will be charged with vehicular homicide and other charges yet to be determined.
