Traffic Accident With Injuries
On Sunday, October 21, 2018 at approximately 12:09 a.m., Harrisburg Police Officers to the area of S. 16th and Berryhill Streets for the report of a vehicle collision involving a car and motorcycle. Units arrived and found two riders lying on the ground. The riders of the motorcycle both sustained serious head injuries and were taken to two local hospitals.
The car involved was found unoccupied. A PA ID card belonging to Esteban Diaz-Martinez was located in the vehicle. A short time later, Diaz-Martinez was found in the crowd of bystanders. He admitted to driving the vehicle and explained that he was traveling east and turning north onto S. 16th Street from Berryhill Street. As he was turning, the motorcycle, traveling west, struck the front of his car. He stated he did not see the motorcycle coming and does not believe the bike had lights on.
Preliminary investigation indicated that the Diaz-Martinez attempted to turn too soon prior to entering the intersection and did not yield to oncoming traffic. Diaz-Martinez did not have a driver’s license. He also failed to call 9-1-1 despite having a cell phone, did not render aid to the injured persons, and did not identify himself to the initial responding officers. He was subsequently placed into custody.
Diaz-Martinez was charged with two counts each of Accident Involving Death/Person Injury – Not Properly Licensed and Accidents Involving Death or Personal Injury, and one count each of Fail Stop and Give Info/Render Aid, Fail to Notify Policy of Accident/Injury or Death, Driving Without a License, Vehicle Turning Left, Turning Movements and Required Signals. His bail was set at $200,000.
