On 5/4/2019 at approx. 2335 hrs a uniformed Highspire police was following a gray Chevrolet Silverado truck when he observed the truck straddle the center line at Second Street and Grant Street. He also observed the truck straddle the center line at Second Street and Paxton Street.
As the truck approached the intersection of Second Street and Eisenhower Boulevard, he observed that 1/2 of the truck's passenger brake light was not working. In addition, the officer observed the truck straddle the dividing line in the 1st block of Second Street and then drift back into it's own lane.
The vehicle was a gray Chevrolet Silverado truck and was displaying West Virginia registration.
The driver was identified as Derek Harris.
I checked his driver's license and it came back as being suspended. There was also an active warrant for approx. $559.00 for abandoning vehicle on a highway.
He was placed under arrest for the active warrant.
K-9 Officer Schaeffer and Beny from the Steelton police department arrived on scene. The K-9 positively indicated on the truck for controlled substances.
During the search of the vehicle, officers recovered 3 marijuana roaches, the cigarillo wrapper with one cigar inside and a digital scale from underneath the folded down center console. They also recovered a syringe and a clear plastic baggie with an unknown off white substance inside.
Mr. Harris admitted that he crushes up pain pills and injects them.
Mr. Harris was transported to the booking center, where he was processed and arraigned. While at the booking center, he consented to a legal blood draw for driving under the influence of controlled substance(s).
Mr. Harris was arraigned before the Honorable Judge Pelino. He was remanded to Dauphin County Prison for a probation detainer and a $1,000.00 bail.
