PA's Administrative Office of PA Courts (AOPC) is warning the public of a new phone scam. The scam involves calls that "spoof" the AOPC's phone number. During the spoof call, the caller says there are unpaid court fines and outstanding fees that need to be paid. If the fees are not paid then the caller threatens to put the individual on the PA sex offend registry.
The AOPC will never make calls or solicit payment by credit card, gift card, or any other means of electronic funds transfer for ANY reason.
If you receive such a phone call, do not provide any sensitive information or forms of payment of any kind. You are encouraged to hang up and contact state and/or local police as well as the PA office of the Attorney General, Bureau of Consumer Protection at (800) 441-2555. You can also email them at scams@attorney.general.gov.
The Hummelstown Police Dept. does want you to be aware that from time to time they may make a courtesy call to someone with an outstanding warrant giving them the opportunity to pay the warrant at the District Justice office rather than be picked up. If you want to verify that such a call is legitimate, hang up and call the police department at 717-566-2555.
