On Tuesday 3/13/2018, Kiano L. Smith, age 20, formerly of Green Pine Blvd, West Palm Beach, Florida, was arrested by the Lower Paxton Township Police Department and charged with two counts of Criminal Conspiracy to Commit Theft by Deception (F3), one count of Dealing in Proceeds of Unlawful Activities(F1), and one count of Unlawful Use of a Computer (F3).
These charges stem from an investigation which was initiated in August 2017 by a 77-year-old victim who resides in Lower Paxton Township. The victim reported that she received a phone call at her residence from a blocked number. The unknown caller claimed to be an attorney in Florida who was representing the victim’s grandson, who had reportedly been arrested for leaving the scene of an accident and needed bail money. The unknown caller scammed the victim into making two wire transfers totaling $15,200 from her bank account to the bank account of Smith. The victim eventually learned that her grandson had never been arrested and was not involved in any accident. Additional records were obtained confirming that Smith received the money from the victim, removed the money from his account and spent it. As a result of an extensive investigation and cooperation with the West Palm Beach(Florida) Police Department, Smith was located, interviewed, and subsequently arrested on the charges filed by Lower Paxton Police.
Smith was extradited and arraigned by MDJ Pelino and bail was set at $20,000 straight. Smith is currently incarcerated in Dauphin County Prison pending a Preliminary hearing scheduled for March, 29, 2018.
