The Juvenile Unit conducts investigations into crimes and status offenses committed by juveniles and investigates matters in which juveniles are the victims. Status offenses are defined as offenses that would not be crimes except for the fact that the offender is under the age of 18 (e.g. curfew, runaway). The Juvenile Unit also functions as the liaison between the schools and the Police Department.
In 2014, the Department referred 98 juveniles to Dauphin County Juvenile Probation. There was an 18% decrease in the number of referrals from 2010 to 2011. The Department handled a total of 312 juveniles in 2014. The Department closed 76 Part I offenses and 103 Part II offenses by juvenile arrest in 2014. 249 juveniles were charged with Part I and Part II offenses. The difference is explained by status offenses that count as juveniles charged in the UCR reports.
