Additional Traffic Restrictions at Union Deposit Road at I-83
Directly from PennDOT-- The next stage of construction will restrict traffic to one lane in each direction over the bridge.
It is time to move to the next stage of construction for the project replacing the bridge that carries Union Deposit Road over Interstate 83 in Lower Paxton Township, Dauphin County. Weather permitting, sometime after 9;00 PM on Monday night, July 17, traffic will be shifted in each direction toward the right outside portion of the bridge. Eastbound traffic will continue to be restricted to a single through-lane and one left-turn lane for northbound I-83. Westbound traffic on the Union Deposit Road bridge will now be restricted to a single through-lane (it has been two through-lanes up until now) and a left turn-lane for southbound I-83. Temporary concrete barriers will be installed to separate live traffic from the construction work in the interior area of the bridge. Pedestrians and bicyclists will continue to be prohibited from using the bridge. Pedestrians and bicyclists are detoured to Londonderry Road where the underpass provides access to the other side of I-83.
Please note – this will cause a significant traffic bottleneck during the heavy morning and afternoon rush hours. Before construction began, there were two lanes of traffic in each direction plus a turn lane. In this next stage of construction – in order continue to maintain traffic over the bridge and still provide room for the contractor to work – there will only be one lane in each direction, plus a left-turn lane. Each lane will measure 10 ½ feet in width. Motorists should seek alternate routes to avoid this construction project or allow additional time in their travel plans in order to avoid delays. This traffic configuration on the bridge will continue until the end of October.
The traffic changes on Monday night will enable the contractor to shift operations and begin demolition in the interior portion of the bridge and then begin construction of this part of the replacement bridge. Union Deposit Road is officially designated as State Route (SR) 3020. Average daily traffic on this portion of Union Deposit Road totals more than 28,000 vehicles – 13,565 vehicles in the westbound direction, and 14,546 vehicles in the eastbound direction.
