I-81: 3 Lanes Open in Both Directions from I-83 to Exit 72
November 14, 2017
Directly from PennDOT: Interstate 81 is now open for the first time to three lanes of traffic in both directions between I-81 Exit 70 for Interstate 83 and I-81 Exit 72 for Mountain Road. Southbound Interstate 81 opened to three lanes (instead of two) on Friday night, October 27. Northbound I-81 opened to three lanes on Sunday morning, November 12. The ramp from northbound I-81 to Mountain Road at Exit 72 (Linglestown/Paxtonia) opened in its final alignment early Monday morning, November 13. This portion of I-81, including both directions, carries an average of 75,810 vehicles on a daily basis.
Some nightwork (between 9 PM and 6 AM) will continue for another week or more to take care of miscellaneous items.
After a winter shut-down, the contractor will return to the project next March or April to complete some additional concrete repairs to northbound I-81 and then diamond grind the concrete pavement in both directions to smooth out the rough areas, improve its rideability, and help extend the pavement life of the concrete. The overall project should wrap up by the end of June, if not sooner.
