Sexual Assault Suspect Rams Police Vehicle
On August 22, Lower Paxton Police were dispatched to the Colonial Park Mall in reference to a disorderly person. While en route, Dauphin County Dispatch advised responding officers that a white male subject - subsequently identified as Christopher Novitzke - had fondled two women inside the Victoria's Secret store and had fled with stolen merchandise in his possession. Novitzke had then fled the area in a green minivan.
The responding patrol sergeant was able to locate Novitzke's vehicle as it was traveling down Royal Avenue - which is a dead end road. The sergeant attempted to initiate a traffic stop once the vehicle could no longer proceed down the street. At this time, Novitzke put his minivan in reverse and rammed the sergeant's patrol vehicle several times. Novitzke was able to move the patrol vehicle enough to flee from the traffic stop. The patrol sergeant gave chase.
As Novitzke attempted to leave the immediate area, other responding units began to arrive. Once Novitzke saw other patrol units arriving on scene, he completed a U-Turn in the middle of Earl Avenue, accelerated rapidly and struck the patrol sergeant's vehicle head on - which cause it to become disabled. Novitzke again attempted to flee the area but was apprehended by other responding units.
Novitzke was transported to the Dauphin County Judicial Center and was charged with the following: Criminal Attempt - Homicide; 3 counts of Aggravated Assault; Fleeing and Eluding; Resisting Arrest; 2 counts of Indecent Assault; Retail Theft. Novitzke was arraigned and placed in Dauphin County Prison in lieu of bail.
The patrol sergeant was treated and released from the hospital for his injuries.
