Good News with Changes Coming This Week for I-83 Exit 50 Interchange Project Near Colonial Park
-- Westbound motorists on Route 22 will soon be able to turn south on I-83; and motorists from southbound I-83 will soon be able to turn left onto Route 22. --
Harrisburg, PA – There is good news to report this week for the Interstate 83 Exit 50 project near Colonial Park in Dauphin County, despite all the rain we’ve received lately. This morning, the new traffic signal on Route 22, located at the end of the off-ramp from southbound I-83, was placed on flash. The intent is to alert motorists to the presence of this new traffic signal. This traffic signal will become operational in a few days with its green, yellow and red phases. Weather permitting, the following two significant changes should be accomplished later this week:
- By week’s end, we should be in position to restore the connection between the off-ramp from southbound I-83 to Route 22 at the traffic signal so that motorists can turn left onto eastbound Route 22. This movement hasn’t been available to motorists since June 17, and motorists have had to be detoured to I-83 Exit 48 (Union Deposit Road) and back on northbound I-83 to access eastbound Route 22 since then.
- Also by week’s end, the loop ramp from westbound Route 22 to southbound I-83 will reopen. This should improve convenience and safety by eliminating the variety of “innovative” ways motorists have tried to cope with the situation by turning around at various locations along Route 22 (such as South Franklin Street, the parking lot of Dunkin’ Donuts, the parking lot of Empire Beauty School, Peach Alley, South 39th Street, etc.) to access a ramp to southbound I-83.
