"Scammers" Claiming to Be the Steelton Police

Today officers learned of phone scammers that are targeting Steelton residents claiming to be from the Steelton Police Department and demanding money.

The scammers allege the resident has an unpaid ticket, a warrant for their arrest or has missed jury duty and they need to pay a fine immediately to avoid being arrested. The scammers are "spoofing" the Steelton Police station phone number of 717-939-9840 and it was noted they had heavy foreign accents.

The scammers are asking the victims to purchase a prepaid credit card and then provide them with the number. They may also ask for cash, a cashier check, a money wire, or some other form of payment.

The Steelton Police Department, nor any other local law enforcement agency, will ever call a citizen to solicit or demand money for any reason. The Steelton Police asks residents who receive a call like this to immediately hang up and report it to local police.
