On Tuesday, February 09, 2021 at approximately 1:18 p.m., Swatara Police Detectives observed a white Toyota Rav 4 traveling on Chambers Hill Road with a heavily damaged windshield. The Detectives conducted a traffic stop as the windshield was presenting a safety hazard for the occupants of the vehicle. While the Detectives were approaching the vehicle, the driver, later identified as twenty year old Leron HARRIS from Steelton, sped away from the traffic stop.
Harris fled from and attempted to elude the police officers while driving through Swatara Township and Steelton Borough. Harris attempted to turn east onto Chambers Street from Second Street at which time he failed to negotiate the turn, left the roadway and struck a tree and stairway railing. After striking the tree and railing, Harris’s vehicle came to a stop in the middle of Chambers Street at which time both Harris and a female occupant ran from the vehicle. Both Harris and the female occupant were apprehended by Swatara officers after they ran through the Cole Crest Apartment complex.
Harris is currently at the Dauphin County Booking center awaiting arraignment on charges including Possession of Marihuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (digital scale), Flee and Eluding Police Officers and DUI. Harris is currently being supervised by the Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole on unrelated charges and told the arresting officers that this is the reason he fled from the traffic stop.
