The Swatara Township Police Department recognized and honored four members of their Citizen Advisory Council at a public meeting this past week. Council members Phyllis Bennett, Mike Leonzo, Gloria Martin-Roberts and Kelly Summerford were all given the Civilian Support Award for their dedication and hard work while serving on the department’s Citizen Advisory Council. This special council, made up of community members, meets regularly with the Chief of Police to help critique the different aspects of our police department and make suggestions on ways to improve community relations. These members tackled tough subjects such as use of force, police misconduct, internal affairs investigations and disparate minority policing. Through the member’s efforts and suggestions, information was relayed back to the command staff of the police department which helped improve department training standards. They also acted as liaisons in which positive information was relayed back and forth between the police department and the community. Congratulations to each of these members and thank you for your service to our department and the community.
