The Dauphin County Criminal Investigation Division is aware of a recent scam involving individuals pretending to be employees of a television service provider. The victim was contacted by telephone and was told he would receive a special discount if he paid for three months of service in advance. The scammer told the victim that the payment had to be made in the form of gift cards. The victim purchased $300.00 worth of gift cards and provided the scammer with the gift card numbers over the phone. Residents are reminded that television service providers do not demand payment in the form of purchased gift cards. Residents who receive an unsolicited call from a service provider are encouraged to contact the service provider directly to verify the validity of the offer prior to sharing personal or payment information.
