High-Tech Auto Theft - An Emerging Threat
Referred to as car hacking, hijacking, or key fob cloning -- a new, emerging auto theft trend is high tech and does not necessarily involve forced entry. With many cars now using key fobs and keyless entry, criminals have figured out how to steal your car using technology. They purchase easily obtainable devices to connect to a vehicle’s computer and make their own key fob. This allows a thief to silently, swiftly steal your vehicle. Pennsylvania communities have begun to see more of this type of crime, as reported by the Philadelphia Inquirer.
How can you prevent theft? o Lock your car, take your key, every time. o Use a theft deterrent device. There are several options used fordifferent reasons.
The most obvious if you have it – use your car alarm.
Use a steering wheel lock. To be a visual deterrent, acriminal might look you’re your car and see a steeringwheel lock in use and decide to pass by – and go on toanother vehicle.
To protect against keyless entry theft:
Never leave your key fob near the front door orwindows where a criminal can interfere with itssignal.
Store your key fob in a Faraday bag at night orwhen not in use. A Faraday bag is a pouch or case that blocks electromagnetic fields preventing accessto your key fob or signal or anything else placed inthe bag.
Use an OBD lock. “OBD” stands for On-BoardDiagnostics (OBD) and the OBD port is usuallylocated under the dashboard and allows access tothe vehicle’s electronic systems. The lockencloses the OBD port and prevents any devicesfrom being inserted without first unlocking the cap ofthe box. And OBD lock prevents someone from stealing the car even if they are able to break in.
Who should consider using an OBD lock?
Owners of high-theft target vehicles(frequently stolen cars or luxury vehicles).
Drivers who park frequently in public places orovernight on the street.
Businesses with fleet vehicles at risk or tampering.
Anyone looking for an added layer of vehiclesecurity.
