At approximately 11:00 PM last night, Susquehanna Township School District alerted the Susquehanna Township Police Department to a threatening "Snap Chat" message. "The Snap Chat message indicated that there would be a shooting at a school. This threat had no specificity at a particular school. Our investigation revealed that this message did not originate in STSD, and it was an old message that has been investigated outside of Dauphin County. Because this is an ongoing investigation, STPD cannot comment on the status”, stated Robert Martin, Susquehanna Township Public Safety Director. Martin also shared that students, parents, and community members should always report threating content to their local law enforcement agency.
A student brought the Snap Chat message to a district staff member, and the staff member immediately contacted the police. Dr. Tamara Willis, STSD Superintendent of Schools, stated that "the health and safety of our team members and learners is our top priority. We decided to close schools for in-person learning out of an abundance of caution. The police conducted a thorough walk-through of each building before staff arrival this morning and have had a significant presence at each location. This decision allowed for virtual learning to continue, while the police department continued to investigate the claims. We are grateful to have a collaborative partnership with STPD and appreciate the ongoing support to ensure the safety of our learners and team members.”
The police department and district administration will continue to communicate developments and information about the threat and update parents and community stakeholders as additional information becomes available.
