Chief County Detective John F. Goshert retired on March 31, 2023, after an illustrious 49-year career in policing. He served as a police officer with the Pennsylvania State Capitol Police from 1974 to 1975. In 1975, he joined the Harrisburg Bureau of Police. He served with that department until his retirement as a lieutenant in 2004. For nearly 20 years prior to that retirement, he led the elite Harrisburg Vice Unit which investigated all manner of organized crime including drug trafficking.
In 2004, District Attorney Edward M. Marsico, Jr. appointed John as Chief County Detective. He served in that role for the following 19 years. At a retirement reception on April 6th, hundreds paid tribute to his tireless efforts as a detective and a police leader. Chief Goshert received recognition from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, the Dauphin County Commissioners, and the City of Harrisburg. The Dauphin County Commissioners declared April 6, 2023, "Chief John F. Goshert Day" in Dauphin County.
During his 49-year career, John Goshert was a tireless law enforcement professional. No case was too small and he cared about people regardless of which side of the case they happened to be on. During his career, Chief Goshert positively impacted thousands of lives. And, by his example, he made hundreds of police officers better at their jobs. We will miss him, but we wish him a well-deserved happy retirement.
