The Dauphin County District Attorney’s Office has purchased narcan for Dauphin County police departments to help combat the heroin overdose problem. Narcan is a drug that reverses the effects of opiates like heroin, oxycontin and vicodin. It’s used by first responders when someone is in respiratory distress caused by an overdose and will be administered by officers in the form of a nasal spray. The purchase was made with forfeited funds seized during drug investigations and will be reimbursed by the Pennsylvania District Attorney Association (PDAA). The PDAA will reimburse counties who purchase narcan with funds supplied by Capital Blue Cross. Narcan has been responsible for numerous drug overdose reversals throughout the country in recent years. In 2014, Pennsylvania adopted a law that permits police officers to disperse narcan to overdose victims if their department adopts an approved policy and officers have completed proper training.
