October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. During this month, not only do we recognize the survivors of domestic violence but also the first responders that provide invaluable assistance in what can be dangerous and crisis situations. One such first responder that deserves to be recognized is Lieutenant Kelly Wetzel from the Harrisburg Police Bureau. Today he was presented with a Victim Advocacy Award from the YWCA of Greater Harrisburg. Lieutenant Wetzel is the Domestic Violence Coordinator for the Harrisburg Police Bureau and created the Domestic Abuse Response Team (DART). The members of DART are from the Harrisburg Bureau of Police, Dauphin County Victim Witness Assistance Program, YWCA of Greater Harrisburg and the District Attorney’s Office. The creation of this initiative has increased the ability of the District Attorney’s Office to successfully prosecute domestic violence cases. DART team members follow up with victims approximately a week after an arrest is made to ensure that the victim is safe and make sure the victim is aware of the community services available to victims domestic violence.
Congratulations to Lieutenant Wetzel and all the first responders for all they do to ensure the safety of the public!
