March 31, 2015- Commonwealth v Damond Young: On March 31, 2015 Damond Young was sentenced by Dauphin County Judge Scott Arthur Evans to two to five years in state prison for Carrying a Firearm Without a License. On August 15, 2014 Young, age 21 of Harrisburg, was visited by police and probation officers who arrested him for marijuana possession. Young resisted arrest before finally being subdued and placed in the back of a patrol car. While in the patrol car, Young removed a loaded .380 caliber handgun from his waist and attempted to ditch it in the car. Police later located the handgun when they removed Young from the car. Young was on probation for a 2013 conviction for Carrying a Firearm Without a License. In that case, Young ran after committing a retail theft and when he was apprehended was found in possession of a loaded 45 caliber handgun with obliterated serial numbers. Senior Deputy District Attorney Stephen R. Zawisky asked that Young be sent to state prison for a significant period of time due to the repeated firearms violations. “Mr. Young was caught twice in a span of eighteen months illegally carrying loaded handguns and in both instances, he was involved in criminal activity. Illegal gun possession is a major problem and needs to be punished appropriately. These are the guns that end up killing people in the streets ” Zawisky further credited the pro-active work of the Street Crimes Unit, a group of Harrisburg City police officers and Dauphin County probation officers, for the arrest.
