On August 13, 2020, following a three day trial and two hours of deliberation, a Dauphin County Jury convicted Murvin Hassel of rape, statutory sexual assault, indecent assault, and nine other related offenses. The incidents giving rise to the charges occurred in early 2018 when Hassel repeatedly brought underage girls into his apartment in Highspire, where he provided them with alcohol and controlled substances. During one of those occurrences, Hassel had indecent contact with a 14-year-old female. On a later date, he forcibly raped another 13-year-old female after providing her with alcohol and marijuana.
The victims came forward in mid-2018, and endured the investigation and prosecution process that lasted over two years. Deputy District Attorney Katie Adam, who prosecuted the case, commended the victims for their tenacity and courage in pursuing justice for themselves. Judge William T. Tully scheduled sentencing for November 2020.
