On Thursday, October 20, 2022, a Dauphin County jury convicted Mason Quailes and Marcus Garner of second degree murder, burglary, and criminal conspiracy to commit burglary. Judge Edward M. Marsico, Jr. sentenced both defendants to life in prison.
On the morning of September 2, 2020, Shnasia Peterson was involved in a domestic altercation with her boyfriend, Ismail Lewis, at 517 North Front Street in Steelton Borough. Peterson then called a friend, who put her in touch with Mason Quailes. Upon hearing about the domestic altercation, Quailes and his friend, Marcus Garner, went to Peterson’s house. Both Quailes and Garner were armed with handguns. Peterson told Quailes and Garner what had occurred. She then told them that she had the PIN numbers for Lewis’s bank cards. They agreed on a plan for Quailes and Garner to beat up Lewis and take his bank cards so they could all split the money. Quailes and Garner went to Lewis’s house and started to fight him. When it was apparent that Lewis was not going to allow himself to be robbed, Quailes and Garner drew their guns, pistol-whipped Lewis on top of his head, and shot him. Between the two of them, Quailes and Garner fired six shots, striking Lewis five times. One bullet went through Lewis’s heart and left lung, killing him.
“This investigation was a collaborative effort by several police agencies, including the Steelton Borough Police Department, the Swatara Township Police Department, the Criminal Investigation Division of the Dauphin County District Attorney's Office, the Susquehanna Township Police Department, and the Pennsylvania State Police,” according to First Assistant District Attorney Mike Sprow. Sprow added, “The teamwork demonstrated by the officers who were on scene and who conducted the follow up investigation was impressive, and ensured that two very dangerous criminals would be held accountable.”
Interim Chief William Shaub of the Steelton police was the lead investigator. First Assistant District Attorney Mike Sprow and Deputy District Attorney Chelsea Robbins prosecuted the case.
