Nathaniel T. Garfield, 30, formerly of the 100 block of S. Union Street, Middletown, was sentenced today to 13-26 years in a state correctional institution by Dauphin County Judge Richard A. Lewis. Garfield was convicted after a jury trial in January 2014, of committing the crimes of Involuntary Deviate Sexual Intercourse; Statutory Sexual Assault; Aggravated Indecent Assault; Indecent Assault; Unlawful Contact with a Minor; and Corruption of Minors. The Defendant molested a female child on multiple occasions when she was 12-15 years of age according to the trial testimony. The abuse occurred during 2008-2011, but was not disclosed to Middletown Police Detective Pete Fure until the Fall of 2012. The victim was present for the sentencing, but indicated to Chief Deputy District Attorney Jennifer Gettle that she did not wish to speak any further about the abuse she sustained. Judge Lewis also found that Garfield met the criteria to be classified as a sexually violent predator, after hearing testimony today from the Commonwealth’s expert Dr. Robert Stein which rebutted testimony provided by defense expert Dr. Timothy Foley. As a result of being declared a sexually violent predator, the Defendant will be subject to registration requirements; community notification; and monthly counseling for the remainder of his life.
