The Derry Township Police Department is aware of recent sightings of coyotes within the Township, and we have been in contact with the Pennsylvania Game Commission to discuss any concerns that these animals may present to our residents and visitors.
The Game Commission advises that the coyotes are most likely foraging for food like most wild animals and suggested that residents and businesses ensure that they secure their trash and food waste in closed waste containers.
Eastern US coyotes are generally not a threat to humans; however, the wild animals should not be fed or approached, and small domesticated pets should not be left unsupervised as coyotes may consider them prey. As with any animal, authorities should be notified if rabies is suspected. Otherwise, common sightings do not need to be reported to authorities unless assistance is needed with redirecting the animal from your property.
Additional information regarding coyote trapping and hunting regulations can be found on the PA Game Commission website: www.pgc.pa.gov . ###
