On January 7, 2020 the Swatara Township Police were dispatched to the 4700 block of Derry Street for a report of a male in distress that had walked away from a behavioral health care facility armed with knives. Swatara Officer Tim Kramer and Hummelstown Borough Officer Jamie Kopinetz located the male who was walking along Derry Street while holding two knives up to his neck, one of which was placed at his carotid artery.
Officer Kramer began speaking with the subject in an effort to establish a rapport with him during which time the male acted in an extremely agitated manner and demanded that the officers leave him alone. The male continued to walk along Derry street while the officers stayed with him in an effort to keep him calm and the public safe. After several minutes Officer Kopinetz was able to distract the male which allowed Officer Kramer to deploy his taser to control this subject. With the taser deployed Officer Shawn Moore and Jason Lex were able to gain control of the subject and forcibly remove the knives from his hands. After removing the knives the officers where then able to take the subject into custody and transport him to a medical facility for evaluation and treatment.
Officers Kramer, Kopinetz, Moore and Lex placed their own lives in danger while keeping both the subject and the public safe. Their actions reflect great credit upon themselves, the Swatara Township Police Department and were in the highest tradition of American Law Enforcement.
Congratulations Officers on a job well done!
