On Tuesday July 26th, 2022, at about 1520 hours, Dauphin County Communications received a report of an accident with a male driver in cardiac arrest on Interstate 83 at mile marker 45. Swatara Township Police Officers David Ritter and Brandon Ryder responded and made contact with two citizens who were already assisting the driver. Officer Ritter found that the driver did not have a pulse. The officers were quickly joined by Swatara Fire Rescue Chief Brenden Orth and other members of Swatara Fire Rescue. Officers Ritter, Ryder, and Chief Orth removed the driver from the car. Officers Ritter and Ryder worked together to being CPR while Chief Orth retrieved and connected an AED. Two shocks were delivered to the driver; his pulse returned. Life Team EMS soon arrived and continued all life-saving efforts. The driver was transported to a local hospital and made a full recovery. He was in attendance at the Swatara Township Board of Commissioners meeting on December 14th, 2022, to present several life saving awards to the involved police officers, firefighters, and EMS providers.
