It's been a few weeks since our police department acquired an electric motorcycle to help combat problems from ATV's and motorbikes being driven on the Harrisburg Area Greenbelt and public roadways. The Department's UTV, nicknamed "Nellie," has been in use for a few years now. The use of these specialized vehicles are starting to show some positive results as the volume of ATV's and motorbikes has slowly started to decrease. Community members are seeing a difference in areas such as the Greenbelt, which is heavily used throughout the summer months. The Swatara Township Police Department is going to continue targeted patrol details in areas that are susceptible to ATV and motorbike usage. We would like to remind the public that the use of ATV's and motorbikes on the Greenbelt and public traffic ways is very dangerous for not only pedestrians and bicyclists but also the drivers of those vehicles. The best time to report the illegal use of ATV's and motorbikes is when you see it happening. By reporting it in "real time," it significantly increases the chances of our officers intervening and identifying the drivers.
